Kids helping Kids

Jamie Murphy, a fifth grade teacher at Canton Country Day School isn’t just teaching the basics of math, science, history, and writing. She’s teaching compassion and community and connection to the larger world.

When Jamie visited the small town of Cotacachi, Ecuador, high in the Andes two hours from Quito, she discovered a program called It’s About Children. This program helps provide scholarships to promising students, enabling them to purchase the uniforms, books, and supplies necessary to attend school.

In Ecuador, education is free, but uniforms and supplies cost dearly. The average working income is around $360 per month, and without the assistance of It’s About Children, many bright young Indigenous students might never receive the education that could help lift them and their families out of poverty.

Jamie caught the vision, and she passed it on to her students. Her class and others at the school sold Easter eggs and held a bake sale, working together to raise more than $800--  enough to support a student through four years of schooling.

Thanks to Jamie, her students, and people like them, the future is brighter for the Indigenous communities in the Andes of Ecuador.

Every dime given to It’s About Children goes directly to the kids to provide for their needs. Learn more, and join us in our efforts to make the world a better place for all.
